SEO TIDBITS

What is a Search Engine?

A search engine is a program or system that allows users to search for information on the internet by entering keywords or queries. Search engines use algorithms to analyse and index web pages and other online content, and then display relevant results to the user based on their search query.

The more popular search engines, like, Google, Bing, and Yahoo!, use complex algorithms that take into account factors such as keyword relevance, page quality, authority, user behavior, and many others to determine the ranking of search results. The ultimate goal of a search engine is to provide relevant and useful search results to the user's query.

In addition to traditional web pages, search engines can also index and search other types of content such as images, videos, news articles, and social media posts.

Search engines have become an essential tool for navigating and finding information on the internet, and they are used by billions of people around the world every day.

The most popular search engines were Google, Bing, Yahoo!, and Baidu. However, the search engine landscape is constantly changing, and new search engines could emerge in the future. It is also possible that existing search engines may become less popular or even disappear due to changes in technology or shifts in user behaviour.

What is an SERP?

SERP stands for "Search Engine Results Page". This is the page displayed by a search engine in response to a user's search query. When an end-user queries a search engine, e.g. Google - its algorithms to analyse the query and return a list of relevant results. These results are displayed on the SERP, typically in order of relevance as determined by the search engine's ranking algorithm.

The SERP typically includes a mix of organic search results, which are the unpaid listings, as well as paid search results or ads. The appearance and layout of SERPs may vary across different search engines and can also change over time due to updates to search algorithms and user interface design.
